College News

College News is written this term by Alistair Pugh - Co-Chair of College. It is emailed out to all parents of enrolled children, as well as linked to here each week.
Appointments can be booked during the above times through the School Office. Please give the Office Staff your details and when and how you would prefer to be contacted.

A Tetralogy of Plays Written By Class 4 Pupils

Class 4 has been divided into four groups and each has chosen a Norse Myth form their Main Lesson to turn into a play.

The children have scripted, cast, directed, made props and organised costumes to bring to life the four individual plays, performed back-to-back.

The Treasures of the Gods tells of Loki's cunning and the creation of Thor's hammer. The Master Builder describes the creation of Asgard's wall, the birth of Odin's eight legged horse and some more of Loki's tricks. Freya's Unusual Wedding shares Thor's adventure retrieving his stolen hammer using Loki's skills. Finally, The Death of Balder shows us Loki's trickery going too far and the beginning of the end for the Æsir!

Rehearsals are now underway in preparation for their performance to bubbled Classes in the School on the 29th June.

Invitation to Online Advanced Higher Art Exhibition

Pupils who have studied art at GCSE level can go on to take Advanced Higher in Class 12.

Long-standing Art Teacher, Penny Reid provides opportunities for candidates to develop breadth, challenge and application. This practical and experiential course focuses on the development of creativity. An understanding and appreciation of design concepts underpins the practical design work.

Pupils develop skills and qualities that are in demand in many different careers: independence, flexibility and resilience when approaching creative tasks; draw on their understanding of expressive art when developing and resolving their ideas and artwork; reach informed creative decisions and manage their own learning; broaden their understanding of visual culture and make connections between ideas and contexts.
Families of the 14 examination pupils are invited to a School Hall exhibition on Wednesday 16th June (GCSE) and Friday 18th June (Advanced Higher) between 5pm - 7pm.

Bubbled Classes will be invited to view both exhibitions during the school day.

A virtual exhibition of the combined GCSE and Advanced Higher portfolios will be available to view from Saturday 19th June on ESSTalks.org.

Class 7 Perform To Parents And Peers

Class 7 presented their play The Royal Hunt Of The Sun to socially distanced parents on Monday evening at 7.30pm; and to bubbled Classes 6 upwards last Tuesday.

Christmas Market Funds

APPLICATION DEADLINE TOMORROW

The Christmas Market Investment Group is meeting on Wednesday 9th June 2021.

If anyone has any ideas for projects and would like to apply for funding, please apply through our new online form ASAP.

The projects can be big or small. Examples of previous projects that have benefitted from Christmas Market funding can be found on the school website. Most recently some exciting upgrades to the staging & lighting equipment in the hall have been approved, which the community will see the benefit of in the coming academic year.

The main criterion is that the project will enhance the experience of the children who attend the school. If you have any questions, please email:
cminvestmentgroup@edinburghsteinerschool.org.uk

Seeking New Christmas Market Investment Group Members

We are also looking for two new members to join the Christmas Market Investment group. This is a great opportunity to get to know the School a bit better, and support enhancing our children's experience. We currently meet every 6-8 weeks via Zoom.

10 Days = One Million Views Of #KidsOnTech

ONE MILLION! That’s how many people around the world saw Silicon Valley Steiner School's Facebook ads, viewed the trailer, and watched the ‘Advanced Premiere’ of #KidsOnTech.

Shared in the Tuesday Notice and by Class Teachers, many of our own school community made up this milestone figure.

As a token of their appreciation to all in our community who watched the one hour documentary and participated in Parents Evening debates around the issues it raises, Waldorf School of the Peninsula (WSP) has gifted Edinburgh Steiner School a FREE parenting guide on ‘children and technology’ by world-renowned psychologist, Dr. Gordon Neufeld (see below).

Join parents and teachers around the world in this timely conversation

For those who missed #KidsOnTech premiere, ESS will seek to host a screening with a discussion once it is safe to do so in the School Hall.

WSP thank those who've donated to support this global effort! It’s donations like these that will make it possible for the filmmakers to hold screenings for parents and educators around the world.

Edinburgh Steiner School has welcomed parents considering a Steiner Waldorf education for their 6-year-old every week since the School began offering bespoke individual family tours to prospective new Class 1 families. All have been recommended the School by someone they know.

The next available day is 16th June. We thank you for your support in spreading the word to those who would benefit from an unhurried, playful, approach to education.

We look forward to sharing our culture change film Now We Are Six with you soon, which will feature interviews with Play Specialist, Julia Whitaker, Moray House Education Director, Deborah Holt, author of paper School Starting Age (on which the Scottish Green party based its election manifesto to raise the school starting age to 7 on), Dr Kylie Bradfield at Stirling University and Upstart Scotland founder, Sue Palmer, whose tireless campaigning efforts to introduce a Kindergarten stage for children aged 3 - 7 led to a landmark Motion in the Scottish Parliament which saw MSPs proposing an end to 4- and 5-year-olds begin formal learning prematurely.

Steiner Parents Can Now Automatically Defer Children To Start Formal Learning Later

Following the campaigning efforts of Give Them Time, the law has been changed, ensuring funding for all 4-year-olds who need more time in a Kindergarten setting. Now, the Green Party have been successful in lobbying
Edinburgh City Council (ECC) to close this birthday discrimination immediately, instead of waiting until August 2023, when the new law will come into effect.

It received cross-party support due to the disruption caused to nursery learning over the course of the pandemic, allowing all autumn-born children who applied to defer with funding to have a further year in Kindergarten.
MSP Mary Green recognised Give Them Time, stating: "You made this happen".

At a meeting of the full Council on Thursday May 27, the proposal was accepted, meaning the 40 young people not allocated a deferral through application or through the appeal process, including several Edinburgh Steiner School parents will be given a further year of funded early learning.

Edinburgh Steiner School will continue as an Official Supporter of the campaign until all local authorities follow suit to bring the implementation to this change in law forward; however we are hugely grateful to ECC for this positive decision.

Our Seedlings Playgroup and Kindergarten are Partner Providers, offering families seeking an unhurried and playful approach to early years education the opportunity of a Steiner Waldorf approach. From August, ESS will be offering the 1,140 hours Scheme.

Supporting Our Parent Body & Alumni's Businesses

In light of the spread of the coronavirus, many businesses are being forced to adapt, changing their business model to suit the current climate.

Many of our parents and former pupils have businesses of their own. Please let us know how the School community can support you by emailing in your advert to communications@edinburghsteinerschool.org.uk. The normal £3 submission fee is being waived
