International Waldorf Support For Ukrainian Refugees

We have all been shocked by events in Ukraine and are full of concern for everyone caught up in the war being waged there.

The European Council of Steiner Waldorf Education (ECSWE) and the German Waldorf charity Die Freunde have met to discuss what support the international Waldorf community could provide for the Waldorf communities in Ukraine.

Please see below letter we have received from the Board of ECSWE with ideas of how we can help. It includes how to make donations.

Kath Bransby is the UK representative at ECSWE and has been in regular contact with the Ukrainian representative along with other members. It is distressing to hear how things really are on the ground.

Best wishes,

Fran Russell
Executive Director, Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship

The ECSWE Board and Staff Letter

Summary below:
Together, we are preparing three different actions that urgently need financial support:

1. Helping affected Waldorf schools and curative education institutions in Ukraine

2. Providing emergency education - trauma pedagogy - to refugee children and families

Financial donations for listed purposes are going through Freunde and can be done on this link.

3. Finding accommodation and school places for Ukrainian Waldorf families.

Also attached is a letter of advice to parents sent out by our sister Greenwich Steiner School. We thought it might be a helpful resource for others who may be grappling with how to approach these issues with the children and how to advise parents who often look to schools for support:
Parental and School Support with the Ukraine Crisis/War

Pupils Raise Funds For Ukraine Selling Popcorn

Class 6 set up a stall on Monday afternoon, selling bags of popcorn to the school community, to raise funds for the Sophia Waldorf School in Kyiv.

School's FB page includes coverage of the Ukraine crisis.
The fundraiser was a delightful success, thanks to parent volunteers and the hard work of Class 6 pupils.

"We have a good start on our fundraising campaign. We are now doing two craft projects - needle felting with Madame Craig and brooch making with Mrs Ciurariu - to sell at a future event."

Pupils Make Speech at Ukrainian Protests

Class 8 pupils, Ella Avdar and Max Katamba, joined Ukrainians in Scotland, Edinburgh residents, activists and politicians at a demonstration at the capital's Russian consulate against the invasion of Ukraine.

Max and Ella both got up and spoke bravely right after the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, Alex Cole-Hamilton, to the hundreds of protesters assembled.

You can listen to Max's mini speech of solidarity here.

West Coach House Completed

The West Coach House is now complete, overcoming the many challenges that jeopardized this project.
Pedagogically, pupils are profoundly affected by their built environment; and it is appreciated excellence can be achieved by creating inspirational spaces to learn in; and so the design had to be child-friendly.

Architecturally, it adjoins a C-listed building; meets modern environmental standards; and uses high-spec materials.

Financially, it was affected by the pandemic and masked wear and tear of the fabric of the 150 year old building from the rafters to the drainage to the utility wires and pipes.

The needs of the School are constantly evolving with the changing nature of the outside world. Designing for flexibility of spaces allows the School to develop and change as well as allowing classrooms and other spaces to be used in different ways. This helps the programme considerably.
Spylaw Road was developed in the 1870s as an attractive central and smoke-free suburb with large houses. Soon after, they acquired their own coach house and stables. 150 years on, the structure was rotten, from the rafters to the drainage to the utility wires and pipes. This was conserved to a tight budget.
The East and West Coach Houses were once separate buildings on different properties, one as part of the C-listed Edinholme villa (at front gate) and the other was once the outbuildings of Woodlands villa (at the centre of our campus).

Just three original walls remain. The fourth wall has been completely removed (above, right); and the entire roof has been replaced, re-using the Scottish slates, dramatically upgrading the building's environmental footprint and tying the two buildings together.
The dilapidation of the 19th Century building, and the needs of the growing school - which will start the Summer Term with 300 pupils - necessitated the build to press on through a pandemic; which has caused significant inflation to material costs across the building industry as well as labour pressures from increased absences due to Covid cases. Yet remarkably, it has been completed within five months, at a cost of £320,000.
The flexible space will for the time being become the home to Seedlings; though at 70m2 it can be converted to two spacious classrooms that would be larger than our current classrooms with a capacity for 25 pupils (around 25m2).
The space is bathed in natural light from the large roof and retained ground floor windows, as well as a pair of solid glass & wood bi-fold doors.
The room is served by adjoining toilets and a changing room (above). An Early Years office has also been created next to the bathroom.

These facilities have their own door with access to the courtyard outside to both enhance the School Hall as a venue, as well as serve the West Coach House when down the line it is converted to two separate classrooms.
Whilst its sister building incorporated geometrical shapes into the architecture, the design of the West Coach House marries the requirement for it to be flexible in its use: being first the environment for two and three year olds; later to be used as curriculum space for the older pupils.
The building shares similarities with the adjoined East Coach House, replicating the beautiful wooden kitchens, with hand crafted handles, whittled and sanded by pupils. This detail enriches the tactile environment; continuing the attention to quality craftsmanship throughout.
The ply is continued, covering the AAA energy rated radiators and bathroom doors. The leaf design on the former (below) continues a theme of soft curves throughout the building. The bathroom door shapes also let in natural light, whilst giving the small children privacy from their peers and adult supervision in these younger years.
Stipulations by the Care Inspectorate meant the space remains as one, instead of two separate classrooms. The focus therefore was to enhance the warmth of this space, to hold the young children in a homely, aesthetic, atmosphere.
The walls are painted in peach, using the Lazure method encouraged by Rudolf Steiner, where colour would feel as though it were in the space and not just on the wall.
The high ceiling has been visually lowered by sculptural pastel white lampshades throwing a soft light, with a suggestion of cloud formations.
Preparation is now underway by Early Years Practitioners to turn this internal environment into a Waldorf setting that will nurture the young pupils; who are experiencing the Waldorf approach to learning for the first time without their parent or carer. This is a simple and unhurried day, without the notions of ‘achievement’, 'success' or ‘failure’.
New open-ended play props are being unwrapped, furnishings handmade, wooden play heirlooms re-loved.

Imagination and creativity are nurtured through free play with simple toys and natural materials.

Due to relocate tomorrow, the Seedlings move has been postponed, owing to Covid cases among the children and Leaders.

Now full; Seedlings applications for 2023 are now being accepted.
The East Coach House got an Honourable Mention in the architectural design / educational building category of the internationally-renowned Architecture MasterPrize™ (AMP) competition, which celebrates the best of creativity and innovation in the field of architecture.
Fundraising efforts continue to facilitate the Growing Spaces Project to move into Phase Three of the long-term campus development programme, to create the long-term space for the growing Seedlings Groups.

Interest In ESS Car Share Scheme Starts Coming In

Pupils travel from a quarter of a mile to 29 miles to get to school, coming from almost every Edinburgh postcode and further afield.

The School has already received interest from families within our community to be part of this scheme, helping to reduce our collective school-run carbon footprint.

If you are looking for your child to travel to school with another Steiner Waldorf family, or have extra space to offer,  please get in touch and we will make the connection with others within your same postcode;
Graph of Edinburgh Steiner pupils postcode plots by Edinburgh Council's Transport department, following the completion of the road safety survey. Over 200 replies are now being analysed to assess ways to improve travel to and from school, based on the valuable feedback from pupils, staff and parents.

Guitar/Song-writing Tutor

Guitar/song writing lessons in your own home. £25 hour class
20 years experience of working with young people (PVG registered.) I am a professional songwriter and you’ll recognise me from playing ceilidhs with Roland Fraser ! I teach guitar and help and support with song writing and kids’ bands, from composing to recording.

Music is sometimes taught in a very dry and classical way that doesn’t excite young people. I focus on the individual: writing and recording original songs and learning material they like. Neil S Barber  Contact: Mobile 07986 183977
