Freehand Learning Experience For Teacher & Pupils

Class 5 has been learning Geometry through freehand drawings. All the work has been done solely by hand, without the help of tools such as rulers, compasses or protractors. The use of tools will come in Class 6.

The intention of this block is for children to learn the language of geometry and the qualities of different shapes having to rely purely on their own abilities and senses of symmetry and harmony.

Advent is an ideal time for this block as the children really need to look deep down within themselves to be able to create these shapes. In the process they cultivate patience, observation skills, precision, attention to detail, and resilience.

Perhaps of interest: Holistic approach to maths adds up.

Words above by Ximena Rodhe, a third year student on the Steiner Waldorf Teacher Education Diploma, which includes 18 weeks of experiential professional placements, ranging from observation to full assessed teaching practise. Mrs Rodhe planned and delivered the lesson block, overseen by Class 5 Teacher, Karen Ford.

While the pedagogical principles are common to all Steiner kindergartens and schools, each school and teacher has the freedom to interpret and develop the curriculum in individual ways. This is because Steiner Waldorf education is rooted in values and intentions: it is not a collection of syllabuses which list specific bullet points of knowledge. Revisit film Cultivating curiosity & wonder. Discover How below to see different perspectives on education Steiner Waldorf teachers provide.

Improvement Plan Now Published

Non EH Postcoders Disgruntled At Petition Ban

Edinburgh Steiner School's petition has gone live; however only those with an Edinburgh address can sign, barring a large proportion of our school community from pledging their support to:

Improve the original/current traffic calming measures at 60 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh, to make them fit for purpose for this 20mph school & kindergarten zone.

Help us reach at least 200 signatures by the closing date of 10th January, 2022 so our petition is considered by a committee of the City of Edinburgh Council.

Sign Road Safety Measures Petition
Don't reside in the Capital? Relatives and friends care deeply too about your children's safe crossing to the school gates.
Our petition is finally live. Let's ensure our road safety concerns regarding our kindergarten and school children are heard; especially as it has been more than eleven weeks without a lollipop person.

Council's ESS Road Safety Survey Deadline Extended

Pupils* Survey
Parents / Carers Survey
ESS Staff Survey
Whilst many of our school community are not able to sign our petition for increased road safety measures at 60 Spylaw Road, owing to their home address situated outside of the City of Edinburgh Council jurisdiction, anyone from age 11+ can complete the form.

The Road Safety Department has extended the deadline for parents, teachers and pupils in *Class 6 upwards to complete the short feedback form on the road safety measures our school community are happy with or would like to implement.

Due yesterday, 6th December, this deadline has been moved to 10th January, 2022: Road Safety Survey. Follow the above link to have your voice heard.

St Nicholas Visited The School Campus On Monday

Saint Nicholas is often celebrated in Steiner Waldorf Schools, at home and in many parts of Europe.

Each Classroom was visited with a basket of gifts wrapped in red tissue paper, secretly left by St Nicholas; and a poem written about the Class is delivered as a scroll, and then displayed on the wall for the remainder of the school term.

Cardboard French Revolution Art On Campus Walls

Middle school Fine Art Teacher, Peter Sheen, led Class 8 pupils in a drawing depicting a scene from their recent History Main Lesson on The French Revolution.

Pupils used chalk pastels on up-cycled cardboard striving to show the street barricades and the chaos and tumult of this time in History.

Along with images of the French flag, these pictures have been on display in the hallway of Woodlands.

Proposed Clubs In Future Terms

Following parents' request, Chess, Wormery Making Workshop, Board Games and Gardening have been added to the proposed Extra Curricular Clubs. Photography, Skiing, Canoeing, Polish, Nutrition and Basketball for Classes 5 and below are also part of this list.

Resources will be focused on those Clubs with the highest demand. You can add your note of interest in one or more of these after school / lunchtime activities at: Proposed Clubs. Please feel free to share this link with others who you know are interested.
