Sign Road Safety Measures Petition

Improve the original/current traffic calming measures at 60 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh, to make them fit for purpose for this 20mph school & kindergarten zone.

Edinburgh Steiner School submitted a petition to Edinburgh Council on 11th November, which has finally been approved and the petition can now be viewed here.

It needs a minimum number of 200 signatures by the closing date of 10th January, 2022 before it will be considered by a committee of the City of Edinburgh Council; however we continue to request the Council add the facility to sign it.

Please do check back (and feel free to add your voice: petitions@edinburgh.gov.uk).

Road Safety Survey By Council

Parents flagged up a break in Edinburgh Council's survey. This has now been fixed. All those who completed the survey last week, please submit your answers again. You should receive a reference number at the end that is different to xxxx-xxxx-xxxx and a confirmation email to confirm Road Safety Scotland have received your survey.

The Survey will take 10 – 15 minutes to complete and is anonymous.

Christmas Card Competition Winner Announced

Every year children from the primary schools across the constituency are invited to take part in a competition to design the Christmas card that the MP for Edinburgh South will send out.

A winner is chosen from each school, and a finalist from this shortlist. Each of the school winners are displayed on the back of the card; with the overall design on the front.

MP Ian Murray chose Evie Hollington's design as the winning Edinburgh Steiner School card. She won a meal for six, and will take part in the presentation on 17th December. Well done Evie, and all the pupils from both Classes who submitted entries.

As well as being the constituency Christmas card, a small number are sent around the world, and once again this year they will land on the doormats of Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street and the White House.

A selection of the finalists from all of the local schools are on display in Sainsbury’s Cameron Toll during the festive period.

Shepherds' Play To Be Performed To School Pupils

Full of humour, the Shepherd's' Play follows the three shepherds in their search for baby Jesus.

Ordinarily the second in a trio of traditional plays performed in Steiner Waldorf schools worldwide over the Christmas and New Year months to audiences across the school as well as parents, this year will be a little different. The Paradise Play will not go ahead; and unfortunately we are still unable to extend the invitation to our wider school community to join us on campus.

On the Tuesday before the end of term, the older pupils of the school will gather in the School Hall to watch the Sheppard's' Play. The cast will then give a second performance on the Thursday to the younger pupils.

Spring Term Bookings Underway

With less than a month to go until the end of term, bookings for Extra Curricular Clubs, School Lunches and Toddler Groups are now underway. The link to the online School Shop is: edsteiner.org/shop

Clubs
You can view the programme of Extra Curricular Activities offered during school lunchtimes and after the end of the school day here

Lunches
School lunches are remaining the same for the Spring Term, made with organic and biodynamic produce whenever the supply chain can facilitate it. Deadline is Friday 17th December: edsteiner.org/lunch

Toddler Groups
Whilst our West Coach is being renovated into the new temporary Seedlings building, our Toddler Groups continue in the sheltered marquee in the beautiful mature grounds of the Christian Community, a stone's throw away from the school gates. These sessions run Mon - Thurs, with both morning and afternoon sessions available. Bought in termly or half-termly blocks, they would make a beautiful Christmas gift for a family with a little one under 3. (Baby siblings under 1 and second parents attend free).  edsteiner.org/toddlers

Acts of Kindness in December

During the cold winter months, many of our school community decide to lift someone's spirits through initiatives that are becoming a tradition on campus. Following on from the 170kg of produce donated to a local food bank, as well as fresh vegetables to a food kitchen for homeless people in Edinburgh, pupils, parents, and teachers bring the following charity initiatives to our awareness, and ask for your support:

Christmas Present Appeal For Homeless Children

There are currently 11,800 children classed as homeless in Scotland. The Salvation Army are collecting new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children who might not otherwise receive a gift this year. The Edinburgh Steiner School community has given very generously to this appeal in previous years; and we will once again be collecting this year.

All donations are being collected in the School Office between Monday 6th -  Friday 10th December. Thank you.

Save The Children's Eco Christmas Jumper Day

The School encourages pupils and teachers to dig out their eco-friendly silly Christmas jumpers, or get creative making one, to wear on 10th December.

Donations of £2 will be collected on the day. Those who take part will be helping children worldwide grow up healthy, safe, and get an education. Funds raised on campus in previous years have helped Save The Children provide projects such as training local aspiring educators to bring ‘Let’s Read’ clubs to communities.

Scottish Baby Food Bank Needs Vital Supplies

Kindergarten teacher Dawn is collecting for a baby food bank in Glasgow to help desperate families.

The parent volunteers, who also run a free breakfast club for schoolkids, launched the initiative in 2019, inspired by the story of a breastfeeding mother being separated from her baby following seizures that placed her in hospital. After contacting a number of food

banks, the Springburn parents realised there were none in the local area. Mum of 4 Tracy said: "We still promote breastfeeding, but some mums may do that and still not have money for nappies," adding: "We've been there one time or another as mums. We've struggled. We've felt isolated. We know what it’s like – whether you're juggling work with raising your kids, an asylum seeker or on benefits. There should be no judgment."

Items needed: baby foods (6+ months), nappies of all sizes, formula milk (Stage 1), and baby toiletries. There is a basket in Dawn's cloakroom welcoming donations.

King Winter Visits Kindergarten & School Pupils

We are delighted to announce that King Winter will be performing for the older pupils in Kindergarten, and Classes 1 - 2 during school time on the morning of 15th December.
For those children (and parents) unable to enjoy King Winter’s story in person, a beautiful audio version will be made available.

Peaceful Celebration Of The Winter Festivals

We gathered the bright rays of the sun in summertime, which warmed our hearts well into the autumn. Then, at Martinmas, we crafted lanterns to lovingly shelter a spark of light, to brighten the darkening world.  How lucky we are to live in a place where the darkness makes the light so bright! And as we move into Advent, this light can be kindled into a flame, going forward with hope to welcome the light of the sun after the winter solstice.
On Monday morning, the children of Classes 1, 2 and 12 experienced the Advent Spiral Garden.  Into a darkened spiral of evergreen boughs (a symbol of life everlasting), they brought their light.
Each child carried an unlit beeswax candle held within a red apple and slowly walked into the center of the spiral.  Here they lit their own candle. Turning to walk back out of the spiral, each child carefully placed the kindled flame upon the side of the path, to light the way for others.
Slowly, the darkened garden becomes filled with beautiful light.  Here, a metaphor for life can be seen, a picture of how we each strive to kindle and carry our own inner light, to then place it in the service of others, lighting the way in the darkness.
The picture of the light of each of us in community is a perfect one.  Gratitude, hope and confidence in the light’s return is expressed quite literally.
Here we stand, at the beginning of Advent

Sadly, the Kindergarten Spiral of Light in Harrison Park's Rose Garden on Sunday had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather over the weekend.

Classes 1 - 12 will each light their hand-dipped beeswax candle daily, as well as their Advent Wreath and open a door of the Advent calendar until the end of term.
