The Prodigious Snob in Stills

The evening performance of Class 8's play, to an audience of bubbled families, was captured by photographer and former pupil, John Maine.

Photography is not permitted in School productions; however high resolution images are offered to the families of Class 8 pupils, and all image permissions have been respected in the sharing of this gallery.

Many Hands Make Light Work

Class 3 has been learning all about house-building this year.  For their practical project, they have been renovating the school play equipment, some of which was built by the now Class 11, quite a few years ago.  The Class has taken off the rotten decking, uprated joists and installed a new deck of reclaimed timber.  Thanks to Mark Miller, Class 3 parent, for the timber!  The Class has also installed a balance beam made from a recovered telegraph pole, stashed away a number of years ago for such a use by Mr Sutherland.

It was wonderful to see the pupils' energy and enthusiasm, and to see how much they accomplished in ten days.  It is particularly valuable for the pupils to use reclaimed materials, which make up the majority of the main structure.

Plans are afoot for further extensions and additions, after the summer break, when the Class will be working with Miss Ford's Class.

Film About Later School Starting Age Viewed By 22k

A short 12-minute documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Saskia Anley-Mccallum, delves behind one of the youngest school starting ages in the world to get to grips with why Scotland has failed to turn the play-based principles of CfE's Early Level (ages 3 - 7) into practice over the last decade.

Aired on the last day of term for most of Scotland, it has been viewed by over 22,000 people on NowWeAreSix.org, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook

The £15,000 project was financed by Edinburgh Steiner School, with the support of organisations and individuals who share our ethos of ringfencing Early Years (0 - 7), so as to nurture all the capacities of the growing child. Hermes Trust gifted a £3,000 grant. An organisation who would like to remain anonymous gifted £1,000. Director Saskia Anley-McCallum and John Main on camera and sound reduced their day rates by over half; and each of the key interviewees gave their time free to the project.

A school starting age of five is deeply ingrained in Scotland's culture. The demographic of ESS families is largely European, with many nationalities in each Class. Beginning school at 6 or 7 is the norm in 86% of the world.

For parents who have grown up in the UK, however, it can feel like 'a leap of faith' as one parent recently put it for their child to remain in a kindergarten setting, where there is a strong emphasise on play, and where there is no P1 standardised testing or tablets or homework. Fears of 'holding my child back' are frequent.

For other prospective families considering moving their child from P2 or P3, where they have already learnt their alphabet and times tables can seem like 'a step back'.

The vast body of evidence is to the contrary; as is Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). What is needed is a culture change. We hope this film plays a valuable part in supporting the paradigm shift in our collective mindset towards the message of a start to formal education at rising 7.

Featuring Steiner Waldorf kindergarten and school environments, thanks to the invaluable support from Edinburgh Steiner School parents, it will naturally raise awareness of the Steiner option in Scotland. It is envisaged this will lead to more interest in the Steiner approach, enabling an easier transfer from mainstream into Class 1. It is hoped online SNSA in P1 is scrapped, a kindergarten for all under 7s in Scotland becomes statutory, and many thousand more children spend time outdoors playing freely and  learning for life, from life and throughout life.

Your thoughts on the project and topic are warmly invited, encouraged and invaluable (in English and/or native language). Organic engagement spreads its wings further.

20 Day Run For Ocean Conservation by Alumnus

Former pupil, Thorfinn Barton, will complete an 20-day sponsored run over Scotland's hiking terrain to raise funds for conservation of the oceans and seas and their wildlife. Leaving on 10th June, he arrived at Cape Wrath from the English border near Kirk Yetholm on Sunday.

"From a young age I have been attracted to everything the ocean has to offer and have been lucky enough to spend much of my childhood surfing, sailing and swimming throughout Scotland’s extraordinary coastlines. Through immersing myself in the ocean for many years I have developed an inevitable care for it’s conservation.

I am now pursuing my love and interest for the ocean by studying for a degree in marine biology at the University of Glasgow. I wish to raise money for a cause that means a lot to me personally and is also indispensable to to some of the most pressing issues we are currently faced with: climate change, habitat conservation and food security." His full story can be read on his donation page:

Surfers Against Sewage.

Thorfinn has taken nothing with him except for a waterproof coat. He has been mostly sleeping during the day and running at night to keep warmer. But had a few cold rainy days and nights with only ‘cat naps’ so that he didn’t get too cold.  "He took no phone so just calls me from public red phone booths when available!" says mum Katherine. "He is doing fine and sounds fit and happy!"

"It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then."

Our final year pupils performed their Class 12 play Alice in Wonderland last night to an audience of parents in the School Hall. They then presented it to Classes from the school today.

"They have worked so hard on it; and the setting is amazing" says Karin Greffin, their Class Guardian.

The play was filmed as a keepsake; and on Wednesday, they will have the Rose Ceremony, where each Class 1 child will present a rose
to their Class 12 buddy, as each now begins their journey onward into life.

This is always a special moment in Steiner Waldorf schools around the world, bookending the one at the beginning of the school year, when Class 12 gave each Class 1 child a flower to welcome them into the big school.
