Class 4 Trip To Edinburgh Castle

Having learned much of the history of Edinburgh's most famous monument,
Class 4 walked along the canal to the foot of Castle Rock and the Grassmarket,
then climbed the hundred-and-fifty-odd steps to the chilly Esplanade. We toured the Castle's sights, from the gentle delights of the St Margaret's Chapel, to the treasures of the Honours of Scotland and the splendour of the Royal Apartments, to the darkness of the Prison of War.

The Class is looking forward to a number of future trips exploring the city... in the spring.

Words by Mr Houldsworth, Class 4 Teacher.

Spring Toddler Groups Continue In Local Marquee

Running Mondays to Thursdays, in both the mornings and afternoons, the toddler group sessions will continue in the beautiful private gardens of the Christian Community on Napier Road, which has access to toilets and the use of an erected marquee.

Every day is a waterproofs day: All the sessions will comprise a walk from the canal to the venue, seasonal craft, snack and circle time (seasonal songs, verses and story). Spending a good portion of time in nature, warm and waterproof clothing is required.

Booked in termly (£88 for 11 sessions) or half-termly blocks (£40 for 5 sessions / £48 for 6 sessions), the Spring Term bookings are now open.

These can be bought as a gift (and the day changed to suit the bearer, availability depending).

Read Toddler introduction to early years for more information on the Groups. See edsteiner.org/toddlers for times.

Upper School Pupils Plant Up A Hedge Of Hawthorn

Classes 11 and 12 volunteered today, planting 2- and 3-year-old Hawthorns about a foot high, coppicing willows (for constructing a fence), weeding out potted seedlings and forestry work.
The purpose of the visit was to volunteer alongside Malcolm Le Maistre, a 'multi-cultural tree planter', who has been reclaiming a neglected bit of land near Caldercruix near Airdrie for the last 10 years, re-establishing an original Scottish ecosystem with around
10,000 trees and more than 30 species in his woodland, an hour from school.

On a walk round the loch, the pupils also took in the sight of mature Hawthorn
trees growing by the water, which have a mythical, spiritual significance in Scotland - thought to bring bad luck to the person who cuts one down. These thorny shrubs are native to Scotland.
They learnt about the edible berries and plants in the wild, such as hogweed, being smelt by the pupils (right), hawthorn berries, tasted from the surrounding trees, dock into ingredients such as flour, from experienced forager Jamima, who conducts workshops on the subject.
And heard from Malcolm about the pros and cons of agri-forrestry as they experienced the mono-culture of a nearby cultural citrus spruce plantation, that in a few years will be entirely cut down for commercial use.
Packed with waterproof boots, garden gloves, spades and loppers, this first trip is intended to be the first of an ongoing termly project involving the various Classes in the Upper School, raising environmental awareness and doing a little towards the effects of climate change.

The pupils travelled by an environmentally-friendly coach, with Class 11 Guardian and veteran school gardener, Foppe Jellema as well as the Guardian for Class 12, Deirdre Hill.

They ended with a bonfire and food in the forrest.

Pupils Adorn Ethically-Sourced ESS Hoodies

ESS hoodies are now being worn on campus; and can be bought in various sizes from the online school shop.

Hoodies will be delivered to your child's classroom. If your child's size is out-of stock, you can pre-order for the next batch.

No School This Thursday & Friday

The 25th - 26th November are school holidays for pupils, whilst teachers prepare for the special period ahead in the school calendar. (You can follow the link to learn more about ESS Advent Preparation).

Half price Scots attractions tickets to boost tourism

The Great Day Out campaign aims to encourage people to make the most of some of Scotland's highlights to boost the tourism sector, hit severely by the pandemic.

Running until February 18th, 2022, the campaign aims to inspire exploration of the country on a day out or short break, allowing visitors up to 50% off admission per ticket up to the value of £20. With most pupils in Scotland in school this Thursday and Friday, this upcoming break provides a great opportunity to utilise this offer in Edinburgh or further afield.

Visit Great Days Out on Visit Scotland's website.

Road Safety Survey Goes Live

To learn more about it, read Road Safety Survey (18th November - 6th December) in School Calendar. The Survey will take 10 – 15 minutes to complete and is anonymous:

Pupils (Classes 6 and above)

ESS Staff

Parents/Carers

It is hoped the responses to this survey will raise awareness of the School’s

Campaign to Improve Road Safety at School Gates.

ESS urgently needs a new lollipop person

Our long-term School Crossing Patrol Guide is currently absent; and our School has been without a lollipop person for more than nine weeks.

Whilst neither teachers nor adults in the Steiner community working on a rota system would be permitted to take on the role of lollipop person on a voluntary basis, interested parents, former pupils and ESS staff could apply to the Council officially to become a SCP Guide, receive on-the-job first-morning training and be paid to ensure the safety of children crossing the road at our school gates between specified times below, amounting to 16 hours a week:

8am - 9am

12.45pm - 1.45pm

3.05pm - 4.20pm

The School's Campaign to Improve Road Safety at School Gates will be updated as and when this petition goes live.
