A hive of red-tailed bumblebees made a nest in one of the felled play logs on the School playgrounds, much to the fascination of many many young pupils.

Class 3 Parents Uplifted By Being Back on Campus

Families of Class 3 pupils enjoyed watching play 'Hadassah, Brave and Beautiful' after school hours on Wednesday and Thursday. Performed over two afternoons to allow for seated socially-distanced measures in the East Coach House courtyard, the Class were blessed with dry weather for the occasion.

"It was such an uplifting experience to not only be on school grounds again (!) but to see the kids all working together with such obvious joy and care. And a great story with excellent performances.” Luke

“It was an incredible feeling to be able to come back onto the glorious school grounds again after 14 months to enjoy Class 3’s play of Hadassah Brave and Beautiful. The children were fantastic and Mr Houldsworth did a wonderful job of bringing it all together whilst finding a safe and enjoyable way for the parents to be able to experience this beautiful event outdoors. We have definitely been missing the school community spirit and we are looking forward to more of these things beginning to happen again”. Harriet

“For me it was quite emotional to be on the school ground again. It reminded me of all the pizzas the girls had on Thursdays and all the Friday markets. I can't wait to be part of their school life again.” Zsuzsi

"It was such a joy to be back in school and to see Class 3 perform their play. I really loved seeing the whole class interacting together again!" Roshini

It was great to see the children together in the school again, not just from outside of the gate, also very emotional. It was a memorable moment for us, something that we will remember for long. Mr Houldsworth is a great teacher and can be truly proud of his Class and the work they’ve been doing together.

"I'm so proud of the class for how they did in our little play.  It was great to see the parents' faces (at least, their eyes) in the audience too!" Class 3 Teacher, Mr Houldsworth

Photos taken by parents after the play and shared with the School.

Class 7 Perform To Parents And Peers

Class 7 presented their play to socially distanced parents on Monday evening at 7.30pm; and to bubbled Classes 6 upwards today at 13.30pm.

Converting 19th Century West Coachhouse into 21st Century Curriculum Space

In 2018 Edinburgh Steiner School's Board of Trustees embarked on an ambitious ten year campus development project, Growing Spaces Project. In a quarter of a million pound project, the dilapidated C-listed East Coach House and stables underwent major renovation to create two new classrooms and two craft rooms (see the project in photographs).
This high spec project was completed on budget, on time, and most importantly is a living example of a community build, involving collaboration with pupils, parents and teachers.

It won an 'Honourable Mention in Architectural Design' in the Educational Buildings category by international Architecture MasterPrize™ (AMP) – celebrating creativity and innovation in the field of architecture. Winners and projects deserving of an ‘Honourable Mention’ are selected by an esteemed jury of architects and leaders in the architecture world.

Later, it featured in the 30th Anniversary Doors Open initiative, an architectural event in Edinburgh encouraging people to discover some of Edinburgh’s most unique and interesting buildings which are normally closed to the public. Edinburgh Steiner School was invited to open the doors to two of its buildings that sit within three acres of conversation ground. In a talk by lead architect Benjamin Tindall, of Benjamin Tindall Architects, the following was noted:

Reusing existing buildings is a very important part of what we can do for sustainability; more than implementing energy efficient measures; for it is using energy already expended.”

Fundraising efforts are underway to raise a further £500,000 to repair its conjoining west coach house (currently the chemistry lab), and extend the Biology and Physics building to include a new classroom to bring the sciences under one roof.
The School has raised £237,000, allowing work to commence on the West Coach House in the coming summer holidays. This includes £71,000 gifted to the School from the Charles Kovaks Literary estate, a £50,000 community loan from Anthroposophy Edinburgh, and thousands raised through the various fundraising initiatives set up by the School since 2018.

Previously, 40% of proceeds from the Christmas Market in 2019 helped fund the conservation of the East Coach House.

The GSP Group is overseen by trustees Rod Grant and Thomas Moore, as well as Bursar Lesley Chari, Project Manager Rachel Craig and Nick Brett from the Estates Group.

"We break ground next month [July], completing the first phase of the renovation to the West Coach House before the new academic year begins at the end of August", says Rachel Craig. "It is a positive step forward in the sustainability of the School".

Christmas Market Funds

The Christmas Market Investment Group is meeting again Wednesday 9th June 2021.

If anyone has any ideas for projects and would like to apply for funding, please apply through our new online form ASAP.

The projects can be big or small. Examples of previous projects that have benefitted from Christmas Market funding can be found on the school website. Most recently some exciting upgrades to the staging & lighting equipment in the hall have been approved, which the community will see the benefit of in the coming academic year.

The main criteria is that the project will enhance the experience of the children who attend the school. If you have any questions, please email:
cminvestmentgroup@edinburghsteinerschool.org.uk

Seeking New Christmas Market Investment Group Members

We are also looking for two new members to join the Christmas Market Investment group. This is a great opportunity to get to know the School a bit better, and support enhancing our children's experience. We currently meet every 6-8 weeks via Zoom.

short video from Sarah sharing her experience of being part of the Group for anyone thinking about offering their support can be viewed by following the link.

Exhibition Of GCSE & Advanced Higher Art

Pupils in Class 11 are offered the opportunity to take GCSE Art, a one-year course culminating in a portfolio of work. They can follow on to Advanced Higher in Class 12.

Art Teacher, Penny Reid, recently had her own acclaimed art exhibition showing 49 pieces painted over the last three years. (Read more). Penny has taught at the School since 1998, with an almost 100% A* examinations history, such is her ability to inspire and encourage her pupils.
Families of the 14 examination pupils are invited to a School Hall exhibition on Wednesday 16th June (GCSE) and Friday 18th June (Advanced Higher) between 5pm - 7pm.

Bubbled Classes will be invited to view both exhibitions during the school day.

A virtual exhibition of the combined GCSE and Advanced Higher portfolios will be available to view from Saturday 19th June on ESSTalks.org.

This 4-week topic block is now delivered to Class 10 pupils by Teacher Mr Hooper, who earlier in the year kindly agreed to let the film crew capture the pupils deepen their understanding as they used clay to mould different stages of embryo development.
