Piping & Burns Lunch For All ESS Pupils

Traditionally ESS celebrate Burns Night with a ceilidh and sit-down meal, hosted as a fundraiser by an Upper School Class. Unfortunately it is still not
possible to to host this event at school. We can only hope that we will be able to do so next year.

This year, with Kike's help, we will have a Burns Lunch. There will pipers to pipe the haggis on the campus. It is going to be gifted to pupils, with a pot of haggis, neeps, tatties with gravy arriving at each classroom.  (A vegetarian alternative will be provided to those pupils who request it).
Each Class Teacher and Guardian will celebrate the language of Scots with their pupils as they see fit and will serve out the meal in the classroom. It would make the day more special if everyone could wear something tartan or even come to school in the full regalia in remembrance of the Scottish bard.

(All pupils who have pre-ordered a school lunch on Tuesday 25th January will be refunded £3 automatically through the School's online shop).

School's Covid 19 Risk Assessment Updated

The continually evolving Covid 19 Risk Assessment for our school was updated on Thursday, 13th January. Please refresh yourselves with this document. It can be read here; and is also published on our School website: edsteiner.org/covid-19

Monitors are now in all the classrooms, signalling when teachers should open windows to improve the air quality.

Comet Creating In The Classroom

Comets are mostly made of frozen ice (such as nitrogen ice, and some water ice) and when they get close to the sun they heat up and the ice boils off, creating a distinctive ‘tail’.
Class 9 pupils witnessed the simulation of a comet or cosmic snowball on Thursday, as teacher Alistair Pugh mixed the key ingredient of frozen CO2, at minus 78 degrees centigrade (dry ice) with soil (because comets contain bits of rocky material), water and soya sauce (simulating organic molecules such as carbon and potassium).
Whilst comets orbiting the sun are the size of a small town, pupils with protective gear then got to hold the freezing cold miniature mass, looking out for little geysers of vapour where the CO2 is boiling and popping on the surface, a process called outgassing, as it begins to warm.
This practical exercise of creating a comet is part of the pupils Geology Main Lesson.

Standards and Quality Report 2021

The annual Standards and Quality Report has now been published on the School's website under Publications & Policies.  This report, which complements the Improvement Plan and the Improvement Plans Explained published last term, looks back at 2021 and summarises the School's performance, successes and achievements.

All schools are expected to produce an annual document of this kind, and it is one of the first things scrutinised by Education Scotland when they conduct inspections.

It opens with statements that summarise the School’s philosophy and character. On later pages there are statistics on pupil attendance, exam results and a longer list of points under the heading ‘Progress and Achievement’ which summarise what has been going on in each part of the School, from Early Years to Upper School during 2021.

The report also gives a précis of the Improvement Plan so that the two documents are linked together.

Report Vehicle Near-Misses At Gates To Police

Edinburgh Council work to a priority system to evaluate locations for a pedestrian crossing, carrying out a PV2 assessment of a site, which measures factors like volume of cars, vehicle speed, vulnerable pedestrians, and accidents.

On Wednesday ESS learned a PV2 crossing assessment was undertaken on Spylaw Road at Edinburgh Steiner School in October 2021, resulting in an adjusted PV2 value of 0.274. Sites with a value of 0.3 and over are considered for a suite of measures that includes a zebra crossing.

ESS recently learned that it is of huge value to the campaign to improve road safety outside the school gates if police are aware of all incidents of danger to child safety due to vehicle traffic at 60 Spylaw Road not limited to a collision. It is well known that the updated Highway Code regarding pedestrian crossing rights are ignored by motorists; the 20-mph zone is not enforced; and regular close-calls endanger our children. We encourage parents to report any incidents they have witnessed over the past 3 years and in the future.
