Now We Are Six By Award Winning Filmmaker
|
|
Award-winning filmmaker, Saskia Anley-McCallum, who specialises in directing films about alternative schools, has this time put a kilt on the perspective in a short 9-minute culture change documentary expressing the importance of being playful in the Early Years.
The film interviews leading voices in the education sector in Scotland, including Julia Whitaker - veteran play expert, Sue Palmer - described as one of the country’s ‘new radical thinkers’ and Dr. Deborah Holt - The University of Edinburgh’s Director of QA at Moray House School of Education, who train many of the teachers entering the profession.
Offering a rare insight into a Primary 1 classroom in a 900-pupil Primary, Head Teacher Willie French, is responsible for the curriculum. He gives a voice to Scottish local authorities Primary 1 teachers who can’t speak out publicly about their exasperation with baseline testing young children in numeracy and literacy online in their work capacity, having signed a ‘gagging clause’ forbidding them from criticising the Council's way of working in their work capacity.
Steiner Waldorf education is spotlighted as a flagship school that has long run a curriculum that offers a start to formal learning after a child turns 6, as Scotland's conversation about raising the school starting age and scrapping SNSA in P1 gains momentum. It interviews Edinburgh Steiner Class 1 Teacher, Lisa Gordon.
The film is beautifully shot by former Edinburgh Steiner School pupil, John Maine of Camel Digital.
It received a £3,000 grant from The Hermes Trust, an anonymous £1,000 grant and financial support in the thousands granted by the School's own Board of Trustees.
Airing as some 164,000 Primary 1- 3 pupils across Scotland take their seats for the last day of the academic year; and many of the 90,000 ELC nursery childrens' parents will be looking at the tiniest ones in uniform, thinking 'that'll be my child in August.':
Friday 25th June, 10am

Fellowship Hosting Free #KidsOnTech Viewing
|
|
|
#KidsOnTech, watched over 1 million times during its 10 days advanced film premiere, explores the issues and dilemmas around children’s use of technology. How do we teach our children to use technology in a way that serves but does not dominate their lives? Will access to an early childhood free from technology become a privilege available only to the few? And whose responsibility is it to find the right path?
For those who missed #KidsOnTech premiere, ESS will seek to host a screening with a discussion once it is safe to do so in the School Hall.
Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship, the umbrella organisation for all Steiner schools in the UK, shares the below link.

'The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces' By Class 1
On Thursday, parents of Class 1 gathered in the School Hall in family bubbles to watch Class 1's first ever play.
Even their classmate Finbar, who is currently in a wheelchair after a vehicle accident, has been coming in each morning to rehearse for this special event, and was able to play the character of The King, as the School provided wheelchair access and the 'stage' was moved to ground level.
In Steiner Waldorf Schools class plays provide a valuable opportunity to live more deeply into a story and to be able to cooperatively re-tell the story to others in an artistic way. Much individual and Class growth is possible and sets the foundation for future Class plays.
As these are young children, it can be very easy for them to be disrupted in their efforts to remember lines. For this reason, photography was only taken after the play by Class 1 parent and photographer, Marlena Cierpial. Filming was also postponed until older years.
"Because this is so much more than a 2-dimensional video presentation and the child will then become self-conscious or possibly decide that the play was silly...laugh at themselves. As much as we can avoid planting seeds of cynicism, this will be a real gift to the whole Class. It is important for this imaginative experience to be allowed to live deeply, so that we can build upon it each year and grow more and more comfortable with creating plays. Not all classes can develop this, it must be nurtured.
I am so proud of the children for their hard work and enthusiasm," says Class 1 teacher, Mrs Lisa Gordon.
After their performance to family on Thursday afternoon, once the school day had ended, they put on a second show to peers in Class 2 and their Class 12 buddies on Friday during the school day.
