Student Council Elect Their Class Reps and Chair
The Student Council is open to all pupils from Class 8 upwards. Chaired last year by now Class 12 pupil, Saul Sutcliffe, he stepped down this year to let someone else take on the role.
Two pupils from each Upper School Class act as representatives on the Council, which observes a clear remit set in constitution. This year, these students are:
Class 9 - Sally and Riley
Class 10 - Amiya and Quinn
Class 11 - Sasha and Mairi
Class 12 - Roseanna and Harpreet
The Student Council have elected Roseanna to be the Chair, and Sasha the Vice-Chair.
Like College, the Student Council aspires to reach decisions by consensus. This is not always easy, but it does ensure that when a decision is taken there is strong and genuine support for it.

Class 3 Harvest Biodynamic Carrots & Potatoes
As part of their Farming Main Lesson, Class 3 visited Garvald Home Farm on Wedneday with teacher Jenna Dunlop, giving the children access to direct experience of working with farm animals and crop growing on a farm run according to the highest principles of biodynamic food production.
Situated just over 20 miles from the school gates, in the Scottish borders, the 200 acres of land owned and leased by the Garvald Trust, is used to grow vegetable crops and raise cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. Its crops are Demeter registered, feeding the local community.
Edinburgh Steiner School's long established relationship with the farm was forced to pause last year owing to the pandemic. This year, Class 3 visited the farm on a 'Root Day', meaning according to the biodynamic agricultural calendar, it is a particularly good day for working with root crops, giving the harvested crop a longer shelf life.
The pupils followed the trackers up eight rows of potatoes, gathering them up, brushing the soil off them and bagging them; as well as pulling up carrots by hand. Before they took the sacks of vegetables back to school, the children topped the carrots. The green tops are then repurposed as they are fed to the cows on the farm.
The vegetables were cooked up for Monday's soup, feeding 87 people.

Kike - the School's new lunches chef on Mondays and Tuesdays - is being given the freedom to be able to use seasonal food on Tuesday that will be a variation on a theme: different meals week on week containing the healthy option of vegetables and making sure the food is full of vitamins, minerals and sustenance for the young brain is at the heart of his approach. There will be an element of pot luck on the day but everyone will get the same dish. Once trialled, firm favourites are expected to emerge.

Qualifications, Exams & Careers Handbook Updated
Qualifications, Exams & Careers Handbook (2021) is now updated and hosted on the Publications & Policies page of the School website.
At the time of writing (August 2021) the conditions for exams and course assessments for National Courses (National 4 and 5, Higher and Advanced Higher) in 2022 are still provisional. The SQA has given notice that it intends
|
|
to offer external examinations (exams which it will set, mark and grade) but this is dependent on the wider picture vis a vis Covid.
The SQA have already stipulated that in most National 5 and Higher courses the coursework (assignment) will be dropped for session 2021-2022 or, in the case of English (folio) reduced in a similar manner to last session. The reductions in content for some courses in session 2020-2021 are also being applied to session 2021-2022.
|
|
|
The decision (made by the Scottish Government in 2021) to replace the Scottish Qualifications Authority with a new body to oversee qualifications in Scotland will not be implemented in the short-term, and we can expect a variant of the current examinations framework to be retained for the next few years.
Please note, for the most part this guide presents information as it would apply in a ‘normal’ year and should be read on the understanding that some elements of this year’s SQA National Qualifications, and GCSEs, are subject to change at short notice.

3-Year Waldorf Diploma Underway

Saturday was the first day of the new session for the Edinburgh Steiner Teacher Education Course (ESTEC).
It was joyous to be back together again and to welcome our new First Year. The day's programme included Eurythmy with Marianna and Understanding Colour with Leonie. Stuart, the new administrator, joined the day too. (He was behind the lens below).
A reflective, energising and fulfilling day was completed by all. Lots of conversations and dialogue:
“If we do not permit dialogue then we must be changed”
― Paulo Freire.
ESTEC is accepting new applications until the end of September, 2021.
