Alumnus Credits Steiner Education In New Exhibit

Artist Daniel Mullen, a former pupil of Edinburgh Steiner School, shows with Elan Fine Art in Vancouver, B.C., and is currently working on “Future Monuments,” a series that attempts to assign visual corollaries to the
amorphous experiences of sound, movement, light, and shadow.

"The visual language originates from my formative education at a Rudolf Steiner school, where I learned the technique of veil painting, which uses heavily diluted paint applied in rhythmical overlapping layers. In Steiner’s pedagogy, it is believed that this way of painting creates an atmosphere in which colour fields can permeate beyond the support surface. I utilize this technique as a way to create an ethereal effect."

Autumnal Leaf Art

Its hard to believe that winter is still a week away, what with the dark school mornings, snowfall and below zero degrees weather; however this flower, created by Class 5 pupils from the fallen Cherry Tree in front of the Avalon Building, is a beautiful symbol of Autumn on campus.

Petition Signed By Hundreds of Supporters

Improve the original/current traffic calming measures at 60 Spylaw Road, Edinburgh, to make them fit for purpose for this 20mph school & kindergarten zone.

Thank you for helping Edinburgh Steiner School highlight the road safety dangers of Spylaw Road. In spite of many of our school community banned from signing the petition owing to having a postcode outside the EH vacinity, the petition has been signed by over 200 people. It will be considered by the next meeting of the Transport and Environment Committee on 27 January 2022, which Edinburgh Steiner School has been invited to attend.

If you have not yet done so, please do sign the petition. The stronger the numbers, the louder our message.

Class 9 Perform 'Whose Life Is It Anyway' On Stage

Class 9 performed their play 'Whole Life Is It Anyway' by Brian Clark to Classes 11 and 12 and teachers yesterday in the School Hall.

A gallery of images of the production by Class Guardian, Hester Machin, can be viewed here

Class 4 Fashion & Pilot Corsi Cube Filter

Class 4 pupils and their teacher, Bruce Houldsworth, have been trialling their Class-made ‘Corsi Cube’ filter in an effort to increase air filtration in their
classroom as the colder days set in.

Mr Houldsworth is a regular viewer of indie_SAGE broadcasts each week, and has been trying out recommended measures based around ventilation and carbon dioxide measurement, supplemented with air filtration.

As it gets colder, the Class had been using less ventilation but switching on their Corsi Cube filter. This is about 1 foot in each dimension, consisting of four HEPA filter panels
and a top-mounted square fan to pull the air through the filter set, plus lots of duct tape to hold it all together.  The noise is not too bad...

Santa Lucia Procession Visits Individual Classes

Class 2 pupils, led by visiting student Salome as Santa Lucia, visited each Class on Monday, singing the traditional song, dressed in white silk gowns and smart red attire, with lanterns in hand.

Salome is a classical singer from Berlin. A recording of her singing solo will be shared soon on the Santa Lucia Procession event page, overlaid by images of the festival. A recording of Class 2 singing is to be shared as part of Friday's Seasonal Festival.

Hundreds of Pounds Raised For Save The Children

Every year around this time Edinburgh Steiner School pupils and teachers take part in Save The Children's Christmas Jumper Day.

For several years now, the School has stipulated the jumpers worn are eco-friendly, handmade or hand-decorated. Some choose to buy from a charity shop, whilst others reuse the same jumper each year, adding bespoke features to it.

Each person participating brought in £2 today, raising over £200 including Gift Aid this year.

Classes Bring Together A Seasonal Festival Online

Over the past week, pupils from Classes 1 - 8 as well as 11 & 12 have been performing songs, verses and music in front of a microphone to be shared with the school community on the last day of term to enjoy online.
The programme of performances will be overlaid with art and images giving a glimpse of school life in the Autumn Term.

This will be hosted on ESSTalks.org on 17th December for the school community to view when they wish over the festive holidays.

Class 6 - Roman Marching Demonstration

Class 6 held two parent performances of their Marching Demonstrations last week, after the end of the school day and in the morning when pupils were in their Main Lessons .

"Many of us are aware that 9-year-olds start to seperate from parents and become more of an individual. Steiner's viewpoint on child development notes this separation goes on to age 14.

At this age, then when they have made first steps to see themselves as separate-- rather paradoxically we can start to help them engage with the process of more consciously being part of a larger whole.

We have just come through the lockdown and into a social context that is perhaps more atomized than before…I therefore see my job this year to move the consciousness of the pupils in the Class from single pebbles on the beach to an awareness of the other in space- as an extra gift —with that awareness comes the ability to construct connections through that space.

In our marching we see form emerge through the relationship of parts (an observation that is reinforced in other parts of the curriculum - the Chladni plate in Physics; crystals in Geology; lines in Geometry and movements in the sky in Astronomy.)

The outcome of efforts of conjoined individuals can be more significant than the sum of the parts. Marching is a quiet discipline that requires concentration and accepting the requirements of an external authority or rule. It is not possible to "improvise" without having a basis in what might appear to be tedious repetition; and one can't legitimately challenge a rule (or authority) unless one has a deep experience of its implications.

In a practical and historical sense, it provides some idea of how Roman soldiers moved safely around Scotland.

Classes 1 & 12 Pupils Light Christmas Tree On Friday

The oldest and youngest pupils of the School will come together with their buddies on the last day of term to light the candles on the Christmas Tree, erected  outside as part of the end of term assembly.
This occasion is a tradition within the School, as part of the Buddy System that continues throughout the academic year, where Class 1 pupils are taken under the wing of a Class 12 pupil. They also do a handmade Christmas Card exchange.

Parents of Class 12 and 1 will also attend, socially distanced on the Avalon lawn.

The whole school will then come together to sing Christmas carol, 'The First Noel.'

Visiting Students Taken To Theatre On Monday

"The performing quality is very good" says teacher Karin Meys, who took the students, adding: "The story is for a bit older kids around Class 2 age upwards."
