School Gates Meet Benchmark For Crossing, Despite 4/5 Pupils Entering Uncounted.

The online petition, in which concerned parents and teachers are calling for a pedestrian crossing to be put in place, collected hundreds of signatures before it was brought to the Transport and Environment Committee on Thursday.

Florian Fusseis, whose children aged ten and six attend the school, helped launch the campaign after witnessing several near-misses due to speeding and the amount of traffic that flood at drop off and pick up times.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt”, he said, following meetings with both Scottish Green Councillor Melanie Main and Merchiston Community Council with Lib Dem Councillor, Neil Ross.

“Councillor Main said the Council usually only acted if there has been an accident – but that is unacceptable. I’d not want to be the Councillor who must explain that policy to the parent whose kid is first hit,” Florian reports.

A second parent's letter to the Council requesting a crossing sparked the road outside the school gates being assessed for a crossing. The results, given to ESS last week, shows it exceeded the requirements to be considered for a suite of measures that include a zebra crossing, a refuge island or pavement build-outs.

This is despite the number of children recorded by camera crossing the road in the two-hours window before the start of school equating to less than 21% of the number of pupils who attended Edinburgh Steiner School that day.

An ESS re-calculation, counting all pupils, staff and accompanying parents for pupils 11 and under (factoring in siblings and adults who are both work at the school and have children enrolled; but not pedestrians walking to nearby 2.5k roll George Watsons) would give a result that would make it eligible for a signalled crossing; however the PV2 assessment can only use factual data recorded by a PV2 survey.

A noteworthy alternative calculation, based on the pedestrians recorded in the survey, but factoring in the temporary widening of the road seen here, reduces the carriageway width by 1.6m; and would mean the school gates would not be eligible for any crossing at all.

Have your say about our children's safety:

If you haven't already, ESS encourages all pupils aged 11+, parents and employees to complete the Council’s Road Safety Survey by 22nd February.

“This is the forum to get the changes you’d like,” says Road Safety and Active Travel Liaison Officer, Mark Symonds.

Dyeing To Show You...

Class 5 Handwork pupils coloured local yarn with onion peels on Friday.

Exploring both cold and hot water dyeing over the past three weeks, this experiential project brings a bit of spark and interest to the subject as many pupils are sewing up their cross stitch cases, which can be
quite challenging and frustrating before the excitement of putting in the zip.

Exploring both cold and hot water dyeing over the past three weeks, this experiential project brings a bit of spark and interest to the subject as many pupils are sewing up their cross stitch cases, which can be quite challenging and frustrating before the excitement of putting in the zip.

Straining the onion peels through a cloth produced a clear, natural dye that is able to colour the yarn to different shades.

Guitar/Song-writing Tutor

Guitar/song writing lessons in your own home. £25 hour class
20 years experience of working with young people (PVG registered.) I am a professional songwriter and you’ll recognise me from playing ceilidhs with Roland Fraser ! I teach guitar and help and support with song writing and kids’ bands, from composing to recording.

Music is sometimes taught in a very dry and classical way that doesn’t excite young people. I focus on the individual: writing and recording original songs and learning material they like. Neil S Barber  Contact: Mobile 07986 183977 website   Email
